1:27AM - Writer's Block: All in the Family

How do you think having siblings (or not having siblings) affects who you are as a person?

View 500 Answers

People learn social interaction from their peers. The easiest way to ensure that you have peers - and that those peers are people you're allowed to interact with - is to have siblings. In closeknit family groups, though, cousins or other relatives from around your age can fill the same role.

So, having siblings gives you a slight social edge, since you are constantly in contact with someone with whom you have to "share", "play nice", etc. It's also the easiest way to be friends - or, at least, friendly enemies - with someone older or younger than your immediate age group, which gives you a slightly broader perspective without being disorienting or difficult to understand, as adult perspectives can be to children.

1:10AM - I'm back!

Hi, everyone!

Assuming you are still paying any attention, as long as I've been Internet-less (what, almost two years now?).

I'm back. Got the internet in Dec, but could not get my comp online due to anti-virus/RAM issues (still on 128.... ugh).

Have anti-virus, will post!

I will be back on IM as soon as Zeki finishes updating - she's getting about 20 every couple of days or so. You can imagine the lag! So I'm avoiding high-load-time/auto-refresh activities - specifically, IM and gaming - until she finishes.

In the meantime - enjoy the tree randomness!

Current mood: chipper

12:32AM - Trees

Biggest tree ever? Redwoods, Calif.
Smallest tree ever? Bonsai.
Most useful tree? Whatever they used to make my desk.
Most useless tree? That dead one that no one can figure out how to cut down without dropping it on the place.
Cutest tree? The plastic one from the Lil' People set (Lil' Tykes set? Those cute round people).
Ugliest tree? A rotting one with all those bugs crawling on it. Ick!
Liveliest tree? A canopy-sized jungle tree - it houses a complete ecosystem.
Most boring tree? The plastic one at the dentist's office.
Tree with the most corners? The one in my lego set.
Tree with the least corners? The small pointy fake one from those sets of Christmas houses, where it's just a cone made of pipe cleaners (chenille sticks). No corners on a cone - just a point.
Tree most widely known? The world tree, from mythology. Although it doesn't always show up as a tree, almost every culture has a variant on the theme. (The only things more popular are dragons and the world-wide flood.)
Tree least known? I don't know. It wouldn't be least known if I knew, now would it?
Tree most associated with victory? It's a tie between olive and laurel. Leaves/branches from both were used as victors' crowns, though in modern times olive tends to be more associated with athletes (probably from the Grecian (Hellenic) Olympics) and laurel with academic achievements ("The Poet Laureate").
Tree most associated with loss? The one that came through the window in the last big storm. (If you haven't had it happen to yourself or a friend/relative, you've probably seen it on a movie.)
Tree most associated with Druids? Oak.
Tree most associated with happiness? Cocoa.
Tree most associated with headaches/pain or lack thereof? Willow (the bark contains the same ingredient as Aspirin).
Tree most associated with America? Apple (Johnny Appleseed, apple pie).
Tree most associated with winter? Christmas tree.
Tree most associated with sailing? Hollow (for canoes).
Tree most associated with breakfast? Orange (but grapefruit was a close second).
Tree most associated with Christianity? Old rugged cross (dogwood came in second).
Tree most associated with witches? Hemlock.
Tree most associated with sunshine? Orange (look, it won two categories! It has a good ad dept).
Weirdest tree? That palm with all the branches right at the tip top so it looks like a streetlight with a bush on it instead of the light.

1:06AM - Angel + Flame? So I'm what, a burning angel?

ang
You are Form 2, Angel: The Pure.

"And The Angel rose as holy protector for all that was created. She fought with honor and valor to serve the good of the world. But the coming of the mankind was her downfall; and end to purity."

Some examples of the Angel Form are Michael (Christian) and Hercules (Greek). The Angel is associated with the concept of virtue, the number 2, and the element of wind. Her sign is the zenith sun.

As a member of Form 2, you are a person of your word. You generally keep your promises and give everything you do your best. Although some people see you as overbearing sometimes, you know that you have to stay true to yourself and do what's right. Angels are the best friends to have because they are brutally honest.

11:08PM - Look! I'm Baghdad!

Caliphate of Baghdad
You scored 75% for Education, 53% for Religion, 43% for Military Might, and 30% for Decentralization!
If ever there was an example of greatness, faith, art, wonder and the highest level of medievel life in one place, it was Baghdad. How ironic that Baghdad was once the center of trade and education in the World, the Jewel of Islam and the Envy of All. To be amongst peers in Baghdad back then is to mean you are a scholar and a saint sir (or madam), laboring the mind in the name of God. You seek knowledge above all and have a deep love and personal faith with God. Relish these warm nights in the desert sands, explore the world around you while you can, in mysterious Baghdad.

My test tracked 4 variables. How you compared to other people your age and gender:
You scored higher than 58% on Education
You scored higher than 80% on Religion
You scored higher than 41% on Military Might
You scored higher than 22% on Decentralization

10:23PM - DnD quiz

Again, from Phil:

Neutral-Good
62% Good, 40% Chaotic
Plane of Existence: Elysium, "Blessed Fields". Description: The plane of peace. Notable Inhabitants: Guardinals - noble immortal humanoids with bestial features.

Examples of Neutral-Goods (Ethically Neutral, Morally Good)

Mother Theresa
Ghandi
Sidhartha Gautama (the Buddha)
Gandalf
Bilbo & Frodo Baggins
Samwise Gamgee
Indiana Jones
The Dali Lama
Ben (O-Bi-Wan) Kenobi
Luke Skywalker
Harry Potter
Hermionie
Dumbledore

Often goes along with the laws and desires of the group as being the easiest course of action, but ethical considerations clearly have top priority. May pursue quite abstract goals. Often aloof and difficult to understand.

Will keep their word to others of good alignment
Would not attack an unarmed foe
Will not use poison
Will help those in need
May work with others
Indifferent to higher authority
Indifferent to organizations

Neutral Good: "Benefactor"

A neutral good [person] will obey the law, or break it when he or she sees it will serve a greater good. He or she is not bound strongly to a social system or order. His or her need to help others and reduce their suffering may take precedence over all else. Neutral good [people] do good for goodness' sake, not because they are directed to by law or by whim.

This alignment desires good without bias for or against order.

Other Alignments and Tendencies (Tendenices are what you would more often sway towards; esp. for Neutrals):
0-39% Good, 0-39% Chaotic: Lawful-Evil
0-39% Good, 40-60% Chaotic: Neutral-Evil
0-39% Good, 61-100% Chaotic: Chaotic-Evil
40-60% Good, 0-39% Chaotic: Lawful-Neutral
40-60% Good, 40-60% Chaotic: True Neutral
40-60% Good, 61-100% Chaotic: Chaotic-Neutral
61-100% Good, 0-39% Chaotic: Lawful-Good
61-100% Good, 61-100% Chaotic: Chaotic-Good

My test tracked 2 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:
You scored higher than 51% on Good
You scored higher than 20% on Chaotic

7:07PM - How to Use Advanced Color Settings

This will take some time, so make sure you've got an hour or two free.

See the previous entry on how to change styles to get to the modification page.

You will need the programs Paint and MS calculator (or know how to convert decimal values (base 10) to hexadecimal values (base 16) using your regular calculator). Both programs should be in the "accessories" folder in your Start Menu if you are using Windows XP.

You may already know how to do parts of this, but I'm going to walk through every step so that if people I don't know who know nothing about computers read this, they don't get lost. (After all, this entry is public.)

1. Open Paint.

2. In paint, on the "colors" menu, select "edit colors". Select the "define custom colors" button. On the right of the Edit Colors box, you will see a square of color gradients. Select the color you want from this square.

3. There is a color intensity slider (the column to the right of the box, with your color going from black to dark (your color) to light (your color) to white, which you can use to make it darker or lighter (tip: if your color shows as black in the view square underneath the gradient box, you will need to chose a lighter shade on this slider).

4. Choose a color you like and make it as dark or light as you like.

Example: For instance, I like medium blues; so, I click a blue I like in the color gradient box, then click a shade of that blue in the slider box. If I want it to be slightly darker or lighter, I click and drag the arrow pointing at the shade I selected to the shade I want.

5. Below the color gradient box, there is a set of number boxes labeled "red" "green" and "blue".

6. Open Calculator.

7. Under the view menu, select "scientific".

8. Use the mouse to click the numbers, or click in the box and type. First enter the value listed beside red in the paint window.

9. On the left side of the calculator, just below the entry box, select "hex". Note that the value in the entry box changes. (You may or may not have letters as well as (or instead of) numbers now.)

Example: My red value is "94". After selecting "scientific" under the view menu, I click "9", then "4", then select "hex". The value changes to "5E". (Note that my answer includes a letter as well as a number.)

10. On the modify journal page, select "custom colors". I would recommend you work with the attributes (boxes) "page text" and "page background color" at first, to get a feel for the idea, before moving on to the other boxes.

11. In one box (whichever you choose), erase the six characters following the #. Instead, type in the two characters resulting from entering your red value into the calculator.

12. In calculator, select "dec" (located beside "hex"). Repeat steps 8 and 9 using the value listed beside "green" in Paint.

13. Enter the resulting two characters after the characters for red in the box for the attribute you chose.

14. Repeat steps 12 and 13 for the "blue" value from Paint.

Example: I erase the current value in "page background". I enter "#5E". My value for "green" is "160", resulting in "A0". My value for blue is "255", resulting in "FF". My entry beside "page background" is now "#5EA0FF".

15. If you want, choose a new attribute to change, and repeat steps 4, 8, 9, and 11-14.

16. When you're finished, scroll to the bottom of the page and select "save changes". Important: always view your journal after changing colors - the color you choose may look perfect in Paint's preview screen, but that is no guarantee it will be perfect when it's on a webpage, particularly if you are using similar colors for background and text (for example, light blue and medium blue, or any light color and white, or any dark color and black).

More Tips )

For anyone reading this that I don't know: I disclaim any responsibility for anything drastically bad that happens while you're doing this. In other words, if you somehow manage to turn your entire page neon pink, you can't sue me.

You can, however, go back and change the colors again.

Current mood: happy ;)
